Anniversary Valentine Card

Valentine card made with red glimmer paper and Teeny Tiny Wishes. Could also be Anniversary or Wedding card.Do you send Valentines Cards?  Anniversary cards are so similar to valentines that when I'm looking for ideas for one I often search the other category too.

This Valentine Lay-out is an example of what I mean.  Its a super simple design.  The white card is 5-1/4" x 8" folded in half and glued to a piece of red card stock as a base and framing layer.

The Heart is punched from Red Glimmer Paper with a sentiment off to the right.

Can you see the pink stamped heart? It's hard to see in this photo - but the heart is centered on a lovely lacy heart image that was stamped in pink.  The heart stamp is from a new set called Hearts a Flutter.

The sentiment is from a stamp set called Teeny Tiny Wishes. That set is my "go to" set for sentiments because there are 24 different sentiments and they're all the same size.  So you create 1 design and its easy to change it up.

Wedding card made with silver glimmer paper and Teeny Tiny Wishes. Could also be Anniversary or Valentine card. Here is the same card, only now its a wedding card. .This time the lacy heart image was stamped in black and the background is green.  How great is that to be able to match the bride's color scheme.

And the silver glimmer paper goes with any thing.

Of course there is an anniversary stamp in the Teeny Tiny Wishes set too.

And speaking of anniversaries:  This year, 2013, is Stampin'UP!'s 25th anniversary.  There will be lots of little promos during the year to commemorate the event. One you can get in on right now is that through March 22, all Hostesses will get a FREE PACKAGE OF SILVER GLIMMER PAPER in addition to other Hostess Benefits.

Sale-a-bration Valentine for Dog Lovers

Valentine in the shape of a Dog's Face, made with Heart dies and Punches
OK, you don't have to be a dog lover to love this valentine!  How cute is this?  This was made by a fellow demonstrator: Sue Adams.

How good are you at figuring out a project just from seeing it?  Sue didn't actually give me this Valentine - I only got to photograph it.  So later I started thinking about how to make this dog - she's so cute! And perfect with Valentine's Day coming up soon.

I changed up a few things  for my version to make My Valentine Dog into a "Sale-a-bration" dog.

Valentine in the shape of a Dog's Face, made with Heart dies and Punches
Instructions, how to make a dog face from hearts for Valentine's Day

First you can see that all the parts were cut with Stampin'UP!'s Hearts Framelits.

The eye is the smallest framelit

I used the 2nd smallest shape for both the nose and the tongue.  For the tongue I cut the heart in half and to give the dog's tongue some dimension  I drew a line with a marker.

The ears and the cheeks were cut with the 3rd smallest shape.
For the ears I cut the heart in half and used one half for each ear.
For the cheeks I used just the top part of the heart.

Valentines Day aside, I didn't want the dog's head to be too pointy. So When cutting the face I let the point of the framelit hang off the edge of the paper.

Sue's project actually has a fold there and I tried it this way. IT WORKS! The framelit DID cut through 2 layers of cardstock. For my project I just glued it to the front of another card.

HINT: Use a post-it to hold the framelit in place while you cut, otherwise it might slip when going through the Big Shot.

Sue embossed her Valentine's Dog's ears with the Heart panel from the Adorning Accents Folder set. And it looks darn cute, don't you think?  But there's a reason I omitted this step.  I was working within a price constraint - see below.

By the way, click on that long image
and you should see a nice large version of it
with all the directions easily readable.

Anyway, about the cost: I also have Sale-a-bration on the brain so I was wondering what if you didn't have the tools needed to make the dog? And what if you wanted them? I wondered if getting the project materials would also get you a FREE Sale-a-bration item (i.e. I wondered if the materials would cost $50, but not much more than that.

So, Here Goes.  For my version you need:
The Hearts Framelits                           $26.95 - - #125599
Naturals Ivory Paper for the Face        $ 7.50 - - #101849
Real Red Paper                                       $6.95 - - #102482
Whisper White Paper                            $8.50 - - #100730
Rhinestones                                            $4.95 - - #119246
Before shipping and Tax the merchandise total is $54.85 and that gets you a Free Sale-a-bration item.

Of course this does not include adhesive or the sharpie to color the eyes - and it assumes you have the Big Shot or some kind of die cutting machine.

But hey, if you don't have the Big Shot yet then add that to your order and you get 2 more Free Sale-a-bration choices.   You can always substitute other paper colors or similar priced items to create your Sale-a-bration order.   You get the idea.  EACH $50 order gets you a free choice. Check out the choices and read the fine print.

Pretty Petites

These petite little stamps make a very clean and simple look for this card. The card is very simple to make, AND it looks really pretty.  The layers help add to its simple elegance and so does the ribbon.

This ribbon is new in the Spring Catalog.  It comes in 3 colors: Melon Mambo, Marina Mist and Old Olive.

When this ribbon catches the light just right it has a little sparkle to it. Can you see the sparkle in the close-up photo to the right?

I really LOVE the fact that Stampin'UP! colors all coordinate.  On a project like this card you really want your inks and paper and ribbon to match.  That's one advantage of buying all your product from one company, you can be confident of the color match.

Here's the same card made in blue, and again all the blues match: the paper, the ink and the ribbon.

Did you notice the punches?  Yes, they are nicely layered to highlight the sentiment.  But did you notice there are TWO (2) Curly Label Punch sizes used here?!  Yep - we have a new punch - whoo-hoo!

The Petite Curly Label Punch is one of the Sale-a-bration choices.  But not to worry.  If you were already planning to use your Sale-a-bration choices on something else, this punch WILL be available after Sale-a-bration.  You might want to use your Sale-a-bration choice for this stamp set instead.

This Flower Trim has me "Feeling Sentimental"

Card made with Stampin'UP!'s Sale-a-bration Stamp set: Feeling Sentimental
Feeling Sentimental when you look at this card? I really like how this turned out. The "sentimental" feel comes not only from the imagery but also from the colors and from the embellishments.

The colors contribute to the "vintage" feel.  The base is Vanilla card stock (instead of white) and the card face is Crumb Cake.  Stampin'UP!'s Crumb Cake cards stock is the old Kraft paper with a new name.  Perfect for that sentimental vintage look.

The Embellishments: The Crochet Trim and the Flower Trim add to the vintage look.  Both are vanilla in color which softens the look and adds to the sentimental appeal of the project.

Card made with Stampin'UP!'s Flower Trim

The flower trim is a new item in the Spring Mini Catalog. These soft flowers are perfect for mailing.  Have you ever tried mailing a card with "hard" bling, only to find you get charged extra for the "bump" in the card?  That won't happen with these flowers.  No extra postage needed with these flowers!  They are soft and squish easily so no messing with the postal machines.

For $6.95 you get 2 yards with TONS of flowers.  Just cut them apart to use them.  And here's something fun to try.

You can color the Flower Trim!

Card made with Stampin'UP!'s Sale-a-bration Stamp set: Feeling SentimentalJust use a sponge. For this last card I used a sponge in Chocolate Chip ink to color the flowers.  The ink caught mostly at the edges of the flower so the vanilla still shows through at the base.  It gives such a pretty look.

And speaking of how things "look", what do you think of this old-fashioned bicycle?  Cool huh?  Very vintage - does it get you "Feeling Sentimental"?  Actually "Feeling Sentimental" is the name of this stamp set.  Its one of your FREE choices when you make a $50 purchase during Sale-a-bration.

Not familiar with Sale-a-bration?

Its a good time to invest in the Big Shot or a set of markers because you get a FREE item with EACH $50 purchase!

And many of my customers use this time of year to re-stock on consumables such as paper, adhesive  . . .
But get busy NOW and take inventory of your supplies - because Sale-a-bration starts tomorrow!

Iridescent Butterfly Wings

What do you think of these iridescent butterfly wings?  You may have noticed a couple of other cards posted a few days ago that used this butterfly stamp. Those were designed by other people.  My own Swallowtail Butterfly finally arrived and I've had a chance to play with it myself.

I  love how this turned out - the wings look so sparkly and iridescent, just like a real butterfly.  And it was actually pretty easy to get this look:

  • The background script image (a stamp called En Francais) was stamped in Versamark and heat embossed with clear embossing powder.
  • The Swallowtail Butterfly stamp (new in the Spring Mini Catalog) was heat embossed in black
  • The color (Melon Mambo and Daffodil Delight) was applied to the image with sponges.
  • Then the entire butterfly area was sponged again in Versamark and heat embossed using Iridescent Ice Embossing Powder.
  • The final step was adding to Jewel Rhinestones for eyes.

I'm loving this look so much
that I'll be using this card for my
Thank-yous for January Orders.

Will you be getting one of these Iridescent Butterfly cards in the mail from me?

Sale-a-bration starts on Tuesday.

That's your chance to get a FREE item from the Sale-a-bration brochure AND this card from me.

Gorgeous Swallowtail Background Stamp

Have you seen the Swallowtail Background stamp in the new Spring Mini Catalog? It is absolutely gorgeous. I love the artwork on this stamp, its so realistic.

Card made with Stampin'UP!'s new Swallowtail Background Stamp. Card made with Stampin'UP!'s new Swallowtail Background Stamp.

The card on the left was made by my friend Sue Adams. Sue is one of my downline. She used neutral colors on the project because this was a sympathy card. The writing for the background on this card is actually another background stamp called En Francais. The tiny little sympathy sentiment is from a set called Teeny Tiny Wishes.

The card on the right has a little more color. This one was designed by another friend: Rachel Durtschi.  Rachel is a sideline. Rachel's card uses Designer paper for the background, which shows through the wings of the swallowtail to give the butterfly some color.

The swallowtail image on both of these cards was heat embossed with black embossing powder. Can you see how shiny it is in the photo to the right?  Embossing powders add a really rich texture and feel to a project.

Are you wondering about the words "downline" and "sideline"? These are words used in companies like Stampin'UP! where the product is sold through direct sales. Sue is my downline because she bought her Starter Kit from me.  Rachel is a sideline because we both have a common person above us in the "chain" of demonstrators.

But what that really means is that we are part of a group that supports each other.  We support each other's business and we support each other in growing our skills as stampers.  We are lucky to have a very active group. Those of us who are local meet once a month.  We have bigger meetings several times a year and some of the people who are further away travel in for the weekend.

Our group  also has a few folks who live out of state - but those people get our support too.  We have some private websites where we post photos and share ideas.  And they even participate when we trade cards - they just mail in their contributions and we mail ours to them.

Having a group is such a great benefit when you are developing your skills as a stamper.  Some people in our group (like me) are running an active stamping business.  Others are hobbyists  who bought the Starter Kit as a way to acquire lots of product at a reduced cost.  What we all share is a common goal to get better at what we do.

Our group is open and welcoming. Contact me if you'd like to get the Starter Kit and Join the Fun. Or get your's on-line now.

Nested Butterflies and a Paper Saving Tip

Today I have a paper saving tip for you. Do you make cards with lots of little pieces, like this one?  This card has 2 pieces for the sentiment as well as the circle background for the butterflies. And the butterflies are 2 pieces, punched and nested.

Lots of little pieces and they have to come from somewhere.  So lets talk about saving paper.

If you are like me, you save scraps. But sometimes I don't have enough scraps (amazing, but true). And I hate to cut into a fresh piece of paper just to make a small piece for a card.

Here is the solution:  punch the piece from the framing layer.

The green back on this card is actually sandwiched between the white front and a white card base.  If you punch the  pieces you need for the front from the green layer, then, when the card is assembled, no one will know the holes are there in the middle layer!

I'm actually making extra holes on purpose. The red base to the left needed only the longer piece, not the hearts. You can see the card front here - its one of the pinwheel cards I posted last week.

The hearts are for a different project. My daughter is the site coordinator for an after school day care program.  So now with Valentines Day coming up I'm making lots of hearts for her to use with the kids. I've been punching extra hearts from any card that uses a red layer.

And speaking of saving:
Sale-a-bration is coming up soon.
This is Stampin'UP!'s once a year Event where every $50 purchase you make will earn you a FREE item from the Sale-a-bration brochure.

Did you get your Sale-a-bration brochure in the mail?  Contact me if you need one.
Now is the time to take inventory of your paper, envelopes, adhesive, ribbons, brads . . . Well, you get the idea.  You need this stuff anyway and its so easy to reach $50 just with the basics.
And its down right silly to pass up on something FREE.  Do your planning now to take full advantage of Sale-a-bration.

Dapper Dad's Tuxedo

Who ever is wearing this tuxedo must be quite the "dapper" guy:  striped dress shirt, bow tie and shiny buttons and a sparkly cummerbund.

OK - how old are you?  Did you know the adjective I just used or did you have to look up the word "dapper"?  Its not a word often used (at least not so much here in southern Wisconsin).  But the reason I used it is because its the name of the stamp set used on his tie:  Dapper Dad.  There are 3 wonderful masculine stamps in the set.

The shirt stripes were embossed with Stampin'UP!'s Stripes Embossing Folder.  Although if you don't have a machine to do the pressure embossing you could leave it plain, or score a few vertical lines.

The cummerbund is scored, and if you look at this picture closely you'll see its sparkly.  That's because I spritzed it with Vanilla Shimmer Smooch Spritz

For the neckline I cut in about an inch from each side and folded the piece in to the center. Then I rounded the remaining corner for the shoulder.

The suspenders are just strips of paper - a way to use up scraps.

Now for the buttons.  I'll warn you up front that this is not a quick process.  The buttons were die cut using the Buttons #5 Sizzlet Die. Although if you don't have that die (or don't have a die cut machine) you could just punch circles and pierce 2 holes.  The reason they are shiny - like a real button - is because I coated them with crystal effects.  That takes time to dry.

Of course I could have used real buttons too.  But this way its flatter and easier to mail.

HINT:  If you try making these buttons, don't make my mistake.  I attached them with glue dots and you can see the edge of one of the glue dots through the hole in the button.

Th Dapper Dad stamp set is in the new Spring Mini Catalog.  Do you have this new catalog?
If not you have 2 options:
1.  You can see the catalog on-line (PDF file)
2.  Call me and I'll send you a copy.  (608_220-3450)

Celebrate with Pinwheels

Here is another Pinwheel Card What words would you put on this card?  Maybe a birthday or party invitation.  Thank-you for a gift.  Or a thinking of you, because you make me happy card. I can see using these on gift packaging too. Wouldn't they look cute on a belly band or cup coozee?  Or how about a fun pencil topper? And did you see Saturday's post? Its a baby card with pastel pinwheels.  Leave a comment below to tell me where you'd use a little pinwheel.

Card made with Stampin'UP!'s Pinwheel Sizzlet Die Stampin'UP!'s Pinwheel Sizzlet Die

I really am having so much fun with this new sizzlet die. Its one of the little flat dies . . . and I mean little! You cut your paper at just 2.25" square. What a great way to use up scraps of designer paper.  If you're like me you have tons of scraps laying around.  Well, here's a cute way to use up some of them!

The die does 2 things: it cuts the shape you need AND cuts the holes for the brad you'll use to hold it together. Of course you could just glue the ends to the center too.  In the card photo above you can see that for this project I added a tiny, sparkly punched flower under the brad.

Stampin'UP!'s Pinwheel Sizzlet Die
HINT: I've found the easiest way (for me) to line up the points is to mount them all on my paper piercer.  I start from the bottom and then just bring each corner up and add it to the stack.  Depending on what the finished project is, you can leave the flaps curved or press them flat to fit in an envelope.

Do you have a Big Shot (or other die cut machine)? Would this cute little pinwheel die make a nice addition to your collection of dies and embossing folders? Its item # 129411, and its only $4.95!

Oh, Whale Valentine

Card Made with Stampin'UP!'s new whale die cut and Oh, Whale stamp set and Oh, Wave Wheel
Aren't these whales just the cutest?  Stampin'UP! has a new little die that cuts the shape of the whale.  And because they are die cuts you can face them either direction. So for Valentines Day you can make "kissing whales".

I really love how Stampin'UP! coordinates product. This die has a matching stamp set and a matching wheel.  These whales are swimming in water that was stamped with the wheel.  And the words and the hearts are from the stamp set.

Snowman Favor Boxes

These cute snowman favor boxes will be the centerpieces for the work tables at our demo meeting this weekend.  Can't you just see them filled with yummy chocolate?  Somehow stamping is more fun when there's chocolate involved.

Construction is fairly easy because its all done with dies and punches.

The box itself is the Fancy Favor Die. Its such a cool die.  All the fold lines are scored by the die so all you have to do is fold and glue!

The mouth was punched with the Extra Large Oval Punch
The nose is one of the petals from the Blossom Builder Punch
The eyes and cheeks are punched with a 3/4" Circle Punch and the white line on the eyes was made with a white gel pen.
The handle was punched as a strip with the Dotted Scallop Ribbon Border Punch.

Our demo meeting is timed to match the release of the new mini catalog.
The Spring Mini Catalog goes live today.  Did you get yours in the mail?

Contact me if you need a copy.
Of course you can always see the Spring Mini Catalog on-line too.
My snowman box uses some new product too. The "ear muffs" are a fun new Builder Brad.  They come 16 to a package (with 20 of the 3/8" epoxy bubbles in case you make a mistake).

It was super easy to put these brads together.  Just punch the circle and use Glue Dots to hold everything together.

Don't you love the "scrolly" design on these brads. I think they make great ear muffs for the snowman.

The ribbon is new too. Its a beautiful striped Organdy, 3/8" wide.  It comes in 3 colors:  Old Olive, Marina Mist and Melon Mambo.  We'll have a few of each color on our tables.

By the way, we welcome guests at our demo meetings.  Totally fun events, we stamp and trade cards.  And we meet often.  Contact me if you want to join us some time.  And be sure to check the class calendar for events near you.
