Nested Butterflies and a Paper Saving Tip

Today I have a paper saving tip for you. Do you make cards with lots of little pieces, like this one?  This card has 2 pieces for the sentiment as well as the circle background for the butterflies. And the butterflies are 2 pieces, punched and nested.  

Lots of little pieces and they have to come from somewhere.  So lets talk about saving paper.

If you are like me, you save scraps. But sometimes I don't have enough scraps (amazing, but true). And I hate to cut into a fresh piece of paper just to make a small piece for a card. 

Here is the solution:  punch the piece from the framing layer. 

The green back on this card is actually sandwiched between the white front and a white card base.  If you punch the  pieces you need for the front from the green layer, then, when the card is assembled, no one will know the holes are there in the middle layer!

I'm actually making extra holes on purpose. The red base to the left needed only the longer piece, not the hearts. You can see the card front here - its one of the pinwheel cards I posted last week. 

The hearts are for a different project. My daughter is the site coordinator for an after school day care program.  So now with Valentines Day coming up I'm making lots of hearts for her to use with the kids. I've been punching extra hearts from any card that uses a red layer.
