Home Decor with Stampin'Up!

Do you use your papercrafting for more than just cardmaking? If so you're going to love today's post because I'm participating in a Home Decor Blog Hop.

Our paper products can be used to create so many fun little decorations around the house. My project today is a shaker Snow Globe in a frame. Are you like me, I have a couple of seasonal shelves where I display little "pretties".

There's lots of little details that make this project special.  

• Stampin'Up!'s snowglobe domes have a double sticky edge that makes it easy to adhere to both sides of the window
• What's snow it its not the right shape?  The shaker pieces are Snowflake Sequins! how cool is that?
• The Shiny filigree die for the snowglobe base adds some class by itself. On this project I used the new Brushed Metallics which give it a woodgrain look, even classier.

• The green trees were diecut from Green Foil paper to help balance the shine on the project
• And the final subtle detail is the embossed trees behind the diecut trees

Do you ever have small children in your house?  I have grand kids and they love anything they can pick up, shake, move or manipulate.  This little framed snow globe will be on a shelf low enough for the grand kids to pick up and play with.

Breathtaking Bouquet Accent Strip

Background Stamping Series Post #5

This post is part of a series showing different ways to use a background stamp.

Background stamps are typically large, intended to cover the whole card front.

Today's post shows 2 cards that use the stamp 

on a smaller piece of paper as an accent strip.

These are both very simple cards

The eye-catching feature of both is 

the foil strip and the fact the 

background image is heat embossed.

Heat embossing adds an extra shine and elegance to a project.

With both cards the main focal point is
the sentiment displayed on punched layers.

 

If you look closely at the sentiment below you'll see lots of layers.

BOTH the black and white layers were made with a single punch

In other words the punched piece framed itself!

 

The trick is to cut the black piece into 4 pieces 

and pull them each out a little to make the frame.

 

I did a video if you want to see how this works.

This is several years old with a different punch, but the concept is the same. 

 

Both of these cards used the
Breathtaking Bouquet Background Stamp.

For the sentiment on the purple card
I used the Pretty Label Punch

and for the sentiment on the brown card
I used the Label Me Lovely Punch

Foil Inlay in Glimmer Paper

This card features a die cut technique called Inlay.  If you were to run your finger over the words they would not be raised up - they have been 'laid into' the base paper. Its one of those "wow" cards where people will ask you how you did it.  And we love to hear people say that about our projects, right?

The concept of an inlay is very simple  (product list is at the end of the post)

• die cut the words from black foil paper, and throw away all the little pieces from inside the words
• die cut the words again from the pink glimmer paper so you'll have a hole to place the black foil into.  AND SAVE ALL THE LITTLE PINK PIECES so you can put them back into the spaces in the black words.

The bonus is that now you have pink glimmer words to use on another project - yay!

The concept was simple, the actual construction was a bit of a challenge because those little centers from the loops on the words are very tiny.  For me the best way to accomplish this was to use a pick tool to dab a bit of liquid glue on the back and then use that same pick to maneuver the piece into its hole. Yes, I know. its very fussy. But so worth it with the final look.

Having the right tools helps: I love the liquid multipurpose glue, its a good strong glue that dries fast.  A paper piercer is so useful, if you've been crafting for any length of time you have one of these laying around.  You can put your puddle of glue on any non-porous surface, I used my Silicone Craft Sheet. This sheet has a ton of uses, I'll save those comments for another post. These three items are basic supplies for every paper crafter and I'll put  links to these basic supplies in the product list below. 

Its all about the papers!  Did you notice there is no stamping on this card?  This card is all about the papers and how they sparkle and contrast. Stampin'UP! papers are the best! This card uses both the pink and white glimmer paper which pairs well with the gorgeous shiny black foil.  The words on this card are from the Well Written die set, but you could accomplish this look with any set of dies you have.

Its a great time saver to have them on-hand when I'm inspired to try a new project.

Gold Foil Butterflies for a Golden Anniversary

I made this card as an anniversary card, but when it was all done I realized it would work just as well for a wedding card. That "happy together" sentiment fits both occasions, don't you think?

Actually the card was intended as a Golden Anniversary card, so of course I tried to put as much gold on it as possible! The Tip Top Taupe paper was the perfect base color, its a good match for the gold heat embossing without introducing another color into the palette. The fancy swirly leafy filigree shape is from a set called Timeless Textures and it ended up being a good background filler that blended in an elegant way with the butterflies.

Speaking of butterflies, don't these look like they just flew down and landed on this card? I love Stampin'UP!'s Gold Foil paper, its so stiff and makes perfect punched pieces like these butterflies.  The trick to getting this "just landed" look is to gently crease the wings upwards and put my adhesive just down the middle of the body.

I like to add some sparkle whenever I can and I've found that 3 of the small rhinestones are a perfect fit for the length of the butterfly body. Here's a complete list of supplies used on this card.

Glimmer Tape and Gold Foil elegance

 If you want an elegant look to a project consider foil paper and glitter. This card uses both!

If you've never worked with the foil papers before you're going to love them. They're thick enough to hold the shape well and thin enough to punch really nicely. The front is wonderfully shiny which makes your projects look great and the back of the paper is a matte finish white so you get good adhesion. I popped up my flower layers on foam Dimensionals to give some extra texture to the card.

One more thing that adds to the elegance of this project. is the Pearl in the center of the flowers (I'm so glad Stampin'UP!'s Pearls are self-stick, it really makes them quick and easy to apply - and BTW they're on sale this week!).

Its probably hard to tell from the photos, but I heat embossed the sentiment. And what to you think of the gold glitter tape? The glitter tape is one of this year's Sale-a-bration free choices. OMG I'm in love with this product. I so hope something like this makes it into the new catalog. Its wonderfully easy to work with. I made a bunch of these cards for a demo trade and it took no time at all.
