Inlay with Seasonal Layers Branch

#EasyTechnique:  Diecut Inlay

Today's card is a slightly different take on the standard die cut card. On most cards with a die cut image you'd simply glue the die cut image to the card. For this card I did an Inlay Technique.

Card made with Stampin'UP!'s Seasonal Layers Thinlits showing the Inlay Technique by StampLadykatie

The difference with an inlay is that the part you die cut is flush with the surface of the card. You can see it in the image below. If you ran your finger across the card you'd feel that the card and branch are the same level. The snowflake is not inlaid so it sits on top the white piece.

Indicator of an INKcredibly Easy Technique when you have the right toolsIts actually very easy to do.  All you need is a tool to cut the shape.  Pick your favorite die or try using a punched shape.
  • Die cut your focal piece (in this case it was the branch)
  • Die cut a HOLE where you want the image
  • Glue the diecut (or punched) piece into the hole
NOTE: You will need a backing piece on which to glue them.  In other words, this can not be a 1 layer card.

I went simple with the snowflake ornament by simply drawing a line for the string  and added a red rhinestone to the center.

This really was an easy project and I encourage you to try this technique. Check out your own dies at home. If you want to make this particular  project I have links below to the product I used.

I'll have more techniques to share in future posts. Exciting things are coming. I've been playing with product from the new Occasions Catalog (which goes live in January). Yesterday's post used some of that new product and I'll have lots more ideas to share in the coming weeks.

Let me know you if need a catalog. My email is in the header of the blog.

I hope I've inspired you. I'm happy to answer questions about this or any other project.

Snowflake Card with Brusho and Shimmer Paint

I am so excited to be getting back into stamping.  With the camp job nearly done I'm finding I finally have some time to get crafty! Here is one of my first efforts.

Showflake card made with Brusho Paint, Shimmer Paint and Stampin Up Shimmery Cardstock

This was made as a trade card for a recent demo event, which means I mass produced almost 2 dozen of them.  One essential tool was my Stamparatus - which is a stamp alignment tool that is lightyears above the Stamp-a-ma-jig. The Stamparatus made it easy and quick to turn out 2 dozen cards with perfectly aligned sentiments.

For the background strip I used Brusho paint and Shimmer Paint on Shimmer Cardstock.  The result has a beautiful sheen and sparkle.

Here is a quick video showing how easy it is to make the background.

Embossed Snow Flurries

Snow flurries are in the forecast - at least here in Wisconsin.  So . . . with thoughts of the white stuff in my head, today I offer you this. A little Flurry of Wishes for a happy day.

Snowflake card made with Stampin'UP!'s Flurry of Wishes Stamp Set

Simple and Sparkly: On this card I wanted something that reflected the simple clean but sparkly look of a fresh winter snowfall. I did three things to get that look.
1.  I keep the colors to a minimum: Soft Sky, White, black (sentiment) and Silver
2.  The sparkle comes from both the rhinestones and the silver glimmer paper
3.  And extra shine comes from embossing the snowflakes

Heat embossing adds a subtle but impressive accent to a project.  Here I stamped the snowflakes in white craft ink and heat embossed with white embossing powder.  Its a great effect.

Do you have a snowflake stamp set?  There are some shapes that are just basic that I think should be in everyone's craft shelf. And in my opinion, I think everyone should have a basic snowflake set, even if you live in the desert or the tropics, a snowflake is just a basic shape.

Flurry of Wishes is available at least through May of 2016. You'll find it on page 48 of the Occasions catalog and if you still have the 2015 Holiday catalog its on page 25. Do you like these snowflakes? The super cool thing about this particular snowflake stamp set is that it has a matching punch.  And the super cool thing about Stampin'UP! is that they bundle products like this and let you save 15% when you buy them together. Cool, right?  (bad pun there, get it?  snow and cool, sorry . . . maybe my brain is a little frostbitten)

Spider Web Doily Snowflake Card

Spider Webs are not just for Halloween - at least not these spider webs.
Stampin'UP!'s Spider Web Doilies are black on one side and white on the other.

Stampin'UP! Spider Web Doilies

You've probably seen them on Halloween cards like these all over Pinterest and Splitcoast

But look what you can do when you flip over to the white side!

Christmas Card made with Stampin'UP! Spider Web Doilies used as a Snowflake

That spider web has suddenly become a pretty snowflake!

Not a bad design if you're looking to mass produce a card.  The only potential deterrent is the adhesive for the doilies. Helpful Hint: for the adhesive on the Spider Web Doily, use tiny (teeny tiny!) amounts of glue on each point and in  the center.  Use too much and it will smear, looks bad and messy (said from the voice of experience). Tiny, tiny tiny amounts of glue. got it?

Project Details:
  • The white circle is 2" diameter sitting on a Scallop Circle of Silver Glimmer Paper.
  • Sentiment is from Flurry of Wishes, Heat embossed in silver
  • Soft Sky background is embossed with the Softly Falling Embossing Folder
