Inlaid Glimmer Hearts

I'm definitely feeling the love today.  Or at least the love of the inlay die cut technique.
These two silver glimmer paper hearts are inlaid on the pink strip.

Inlaid means that you cut a matching hole and set the die into that hole
instead of making it a new layer on top the rest.

The reason I chose that technique for this project is that I wanted the white to show through the openings in the swirls of the hearts. If I had just glued the silver heart on top the pink strip we'd see pink showing through the open spaces in the swirls.

I'm so happy with the contrast of this project. The pink is very intense on the actual project and the silver glimmer paper stands out beautifully.

Tips on the color match: I made my pink strip from glossy paper and lightly sponged on Lovely Lipstick ink.  I also colored my rhinestones with the Lovely Lipstick Blends marker to match.  The rhinestones are plastic so they are a non-porous surface. Which means you can't color them with the Classic Markers (which are water based) but you CAN color them with the Blends (which are alcohol markers).  Yay - thank-you Stampin'UP! for providing us one more way to color coordinate our projects!

A few other hints to pass along if you try this.
  • The heart shape is very flexible because it has the large opening in the center,
so be sure to pull the edges of the heart tight back against the pink strip
  • Also remember to save the large pink piece from the center of the heart to complete the strip
Inlay is a really cool technique and also pretty easy - especially if you pick the right dies (not too many small parts).  What I like about doing an inlay is that its one of those techniques where people stare at your project for a minute trying to figure out how you did it.  I love those "how did you do that" comments. Here's another card I posted with the Inlay Technique.

I hope I have inspired you try this technique. The product list for this project is at the end of the post. This stamp set and die set is a seasonal product. It will be available through the end of May whether its available after that is unknown.

Stampin'UP!'s Blends (the alcohol markers) are here to stay! Alcohol markers are a personal preference when coloring and I'm so delighted that StampinUP! has invested in bringing us this product.  One of the things that originally drew me to this company was the ability to color match my paper and inks.  Check out all the color options for the Blends Alcohol Markers here.

I'm happy to answer questions about this or any other project. Product links for today's project are at the end of the post. I can also answer questions about the advantages of joining Stampin'UP! The product is fun to demonstrate and sell (who wouldn't want to get paid to play). And the company also loves discount buyers.  Just ask me . . .

Inlay with Seasonal Layers Branch

#EasyTechnique:  Diecut Inlay

Today's card is a slightly different take on the standard die cut card. On most cards with a die cut image you'd simply glue the die cut image to the card. For this card I did an Inlay Technique.

Card made with Stampin'UP!'s Seasonal Layers Thinlits showing the Inlay Technique by StampLadykatie

The difference with an inlay is that the part you die cut is flush with the surface of the card. You can see it in the image below. If you ran your finger across the card you'd feel that the card and branch are the same level. The snowflake is not inlaid so it sits on top the white piece.

Indicator of an INKcredibly Easy Technique when you have the right toolsIts actually very easy to do.  All you need is a tool to cut the shape.  Pick your favorite die or try using a punched shape.
  • Die cut your focal piece (in this case it was the branch)
  • Die cut a HOLE where you want the image
  • Glue the diecut (or punched) piece into the hole
NOTE: You will need a backing piece on which to glue them.  In other words, this can not be a 1 layer card.

I went simple with the snowflake ornament by simply drawing a line for the string  and added a red rhinestone to the center.

This really was an easy project and I encourage you to try this technique. Check out your own dies at home. If you want to make this particular  project I have links below to the product I used.

I'll have more techniques to share in future posts. Exciting things are coming. I've been playing with product from the new Occasions Catalog (which goes live in January). Yesterday's post used some of that new product and I'll have lots more ideas to share in the coming weeks.

Let me know you if need a catalog. My email is in the header of the blog.

I hope I've inspired you. I'm happy to answer questions about this or any other project.
