Are you a digital crafter?  I'm finding that Stampin'UP!'s software is really fun, and just a little addicting.  Its so easy to change little things. I can make my card or scrapbook page and then change up a color, or the size of something, or use a different sentiment.

Don't get me wrong - I love playing with paper. But this digital stuff is fun too. When you're in full design mode its just so easy to change the color. Switch out a sentiment. Change the image. Use a different Designer Paper. You can even change the size of the embellishments and stamps and photos. And all with no wasted paper.   And I'm still using all of Stampin'UP!'s great stamp images. Plus I can still add some real embellishments to my digital project if I want - AND the colors in the program match my papers and ribbons. Yep - you can probably tell I think this is really great.

Digital Gift Tags

Convention officially starts today - although we've been out here in Salt Lake City for several days now. We have do some stamping and some sightseeing. And we have our own networking and training meetings.  

Monday's post showed my room mates Joyce and Lori packaging up gift bags. Joyce has quite a large downline and she likes to give gifts to everyone who attends convention. This year the gift is samples of some of the new embellishments in the new catalog.

Digital 4th of July Card

Happy 4th of July!

This card was made using Stampin'UP!'s digital crafting software.  If you're not familiar with this software its called My Digital Studio. See samples of projects made with MDS HERE.

The reason I made this card digital instead of with paper is because the colors are more vibrant on the black background. With real paper the ink tends to sink into the paper and on a black background the fireworks wouldn't stand out as much. Don't you think a 4th of July card needs to really "pop".

Wondering about printing?  With the My Digital Studio program you have 2 printing options.  You can print your projects on your printer at home or order professionally printed copies on-line.  With this card I'd have them printed because with the black background they'd use way too much printer ink. 

Today really is a day to relax and celebrate and I hope you are able to enjoy it with friends and family.  For me part of the relaxing is sitting in my craft area and doing a little creating - both real and digital.

How to make a Quick Digital Thank-You Card

I am loving My Digital Studio  - that's the name of Stampin'UP!'s digital stamping program:  My Digital Studio.

Have you ever wondered what's involved with making digital cards and scrapbook pages? 

Here are the steps to make this card.

1. Choose your stamps: a banner, a flower and a border, and the words
2. Color the stamps: Island Indigo and Calypso Coral
3. Add a "punch" (the long rectangle shape under the bottom border
4. Re-size and Layer the images
5. Print

Yes, there are a few extra tricks on this project, but really, its almost as easy as the 5 steps above.

OK, you ask skeptically, what tricks? 
Notice the black "shadow" effect on the words?  That's because the words are on there twice, the coral words layered on top and slightly offset from the same words in black.  Nice effect, don't you think? 

I printed this on my computer at home and it looks just fine for what I need.

Digital cards are great especially when you are mass-producing.  If you have multiple cards that will all have the same inside message its definitely the way to go.

And the program even lets you 

add artwork to the inside of the card.

This just helps you get your bearings - its useful to know how the work space is divided.

• On the left is where you can access your photos.  
• The center is the workspace. 
• Below it is a quick set of thumbnails showing all the pages of your project. You can switch from page to page here. 
• On the right are all the control panels when working with the different elements (stamps, photos, text boxes, designer papers etc) Each control panel expands when you are working with that type of element.

As with any software, the more you use it the better you get.  And really, this is pretty easy.  And easy on your pocket book too. The software now costs only $20 for the full program.

A Mixed Bunch: card and Scrapbook Page

This post is a "Mixed Bunch" for several reasons

• First: it uses a stamp set called Mixed Bunch
• and second: the same image is presented in a mix of both traditional and digital stamping
• and third: there is a mix of cards and scrapbook pages

First is the Traditional card.  The flower image from the Mixed Bunch stamp set was stamped in Pink Pirouette ink and Punched with the Blossom Punch.  The sentiment used here is from a set called A Word for You. By the way: I love the font used in this set.  

Next is the Digital card.  I was trying to make it exactly the same but ended up using different colors for the banner. The banner on the traditional card is River Rock and the one on the digital card is Certainly Celery.

The two scrapbook pages below are made from images taken at a recent event.  Last week I taught a class at Edgewood College.  The students made a card similar to the one on the top and I wanted to show how our digital software can duplicate the traditional stamping and scrapping.

 

So, a mixed bunch of projects and formats.  But the thing all these projects have in common (besides the Mixed Bunch stamp set), is that they are all pretty easy.  And in case you are wondering how easy it was to design the scrapbook page - well, I must confess a secret.  I didn't really do much of the designing.  I used one of the templates that comes with the MyDigitalStudio program and just changed up a few things. So it really was easy.

Stampin'UP!'s digital software is called MyDigitalStudio. The program has just been upgraded and simplified with a reduction in cost.  You can now get the FULL PROGRAM for only $19.95.

Baby Family Photo Board Book

Family Album Board Book for my granddaughter.  By "boardbook" I mean that each page will be the heavy duty cardboard with rounded corners.  A scrapbook would have had paper pages.

This Board Book is a family album for my baby granddaughter.  It features family and individual photos from both sides of her family.  Each family has its own page. This is something that every member of the family can read to her as she's learning words.  It will help her become familiar with the faces of her family members that she doesn't see on a daily basis. And it will help her learn family words, like: cousin, aunt and GRANDMA etc.

Ideas for Mass Producing Home Made Christmas Cards

 Are you someone who likes to send home made Christmas Cards? My Grandfather always sent home made holiday greetings. He hand drew the cards and had them printed off and then colored them all himself. This is one from one of his later years. He did this right up until his death.

I have kept and treasured every one of them.

In the Stampin’UP! world we have 2 choices for homemade Christmas cards. The traditional method is to hand stamp or punch all the elements. Our other option is to create a digital card and have them printed.

The card to the right is for the fans of traditional stamping. This would be a good candidate for mass production. The 2 snowflakes are die cut and the Big Shot can easily cut 2 -3 pieces of paper at a time. The white piece is embossed and the white paper is thin enough that you can emboss 2 pieces of paper at the same time. The scallop hole is punched. But don’t try to punch more than 1 sheet of paper at a time, you could ruin your punch. Why would this be good for mass production? Because it follows rule #1 of “Katie’s Rules for Mass Production” – it’s a simple card. Rule #1 = KEEP IT SIMPLE. Each time you add an additional layer or bow or stamped image it adds to the total time to prepare the batch. Rule #2 = STAMP FIRST, THEN GLUE Its so frustrating to get everything assembled perfectly and then mess up with the final act of stamping a sentiment. For this card I stamped the sentient on all the cards before I glued on the white piece or the snowflakes.

Rule #3 = BUILD IT ASSEMBLY LINE FASHION (rather than one card at a time). For this card I cut all the snowflakes. Then I embossed and punched all the white pieces. Then I stamped all my sentiments and finally glued it all together.

Before I get to the "Good News" item let me respond to Georgia's Question. Georgia wrote to ask me what exactly MDS was and "how does this digital crafting thing work?"  Thanks for the question.

My Digital Studio Samples

Are you aware that Stampin'UP! has Digital Software?  This software can make cards, scrapbook pages, calendars, banners, flyers and more.  The software has images of Stamps, Paper, Printed Designer Paper, Ribbons, Brads, Buttons, Punches and more.

There are many advantages of going digital:
*you can re-size an image
*you can add shadows
*you can do reflections
*you can make "hybrid" pieces
and more tricks than I can even mention here.

And consider the cost:  Once you own the file you can use it forever!  For example, when you buy a set of buttons, after you use them up, you need to buy more. When you buy the digital file you never use them up, you just keep re-using the file.

Not into digital at all?  Thats OK.  I love the feel of paper in my hand too.  But here's a special tip:  I love to browse the digital samples because I get ideas for things I can do with my real stamps.  For example, I made this card with my real stamps.  But it is almost a direct copy of a sample shown on the flyer for the By the Seashore Digital Stamp Set.  You can see small differences.  The sample card was made with Designer Paper and I used the En Francais Background Stamp. But I loved the look of the Digital Sample so I used it as a guide to make my paper version.
