Tips for Working with Vellum

Vellum papers are a tight weave translucent material.  They provide a variety of options for adding artistic touches to a project. You'll often see vellum used as an overlay to mute the colors behind it. Vellum can easily be punched and die cut. Think about those super elegant looking invitations an announcements.  Or awesome projects with lots of leafy foliage sprays peaking out behind a focal point.

Color and texture options: Vellum is typically a milky white translucent color, but color can be added during the manufacturing process. The entire sheet can be colored and images can be printed on it. This tight weave paper is typically very smooth, but texture can also be added during manufacturing.  In addition to the traditional vellum, Stampin'Up! currently has 3 options for vellum papers: 

Is your brain whirling with possibilities right now?  If so there are 2 issues you need to plan for.

1. 
   choose your adhesive carefully,
   
   the fact that vellum is translucent means adhesive may be visible through the paper
   
   one solution is to hide the adhesive behind an element on top the vellum . . . for a project like the card to the right, the adhesive can be hidden behind the flowers glued on top of the vellum doily
   
   another solution is to uniformly cover the vellum with adhesive, a double sided adhesive sheet works well for that
   
   
2. plan for extra drying time for any ink you add

 You can use vellum to create a variety of special effects on a project. 

• Because its translucent its the perfect paper to use to soften the background on a busy card so you can highlight a sentiment like on this card.
  and or a ghost, or
• The soft surface is ideal to  use for  snowdrifts, 
  
• You can also heat emboss for beautiful overlays like this butterfly card. 
• Its best to add color from the back side. The tight weave means the ink sits on the surface and can smear. Check out the beautiful look of these snowflakes and this butterfly . . . both projects were heat embossed in white and color added to the underside.

Fall Step Card

Today' project is an awesome fall Step Card. Elements of a fall card include the color scheme, leaf imagery and lots of layers and depth.  In addition to all the layers with the die cuts, a step card certainly offers depth.

Where do you draw your inspiration for a project. Nature certainly offers choices. Sometimes we're inspired by product, for example I have these awesome new Basic Border Dies that I wanted to play with.I've also been enjoying the Beautiful Trees Dies. Then when I came across Joy Nelson's beautiful tree card made with scraps I knew exactly how I wanted to combine the two dies.

I could have just cut curves for the hills, but I like the look of the edge from the Basic Border Dies.

The tree has lots of layers too. The branch die cut is sandwiched between the sparkly foliage layer  and a back piece die cut from vellum. Can you see the color variation in the foliage? I used some Ombre Specialty Paper - perfect for fall, right? 

You can never have too many layers on a fall card, right? lots of depth and texture.  So speaking of inspiration, I decided to turn this into a Step Card when I saw Laurie LaRose's beautiful floral Step Card. 

 

Laurie's project is horizontal, mine is vertical. Hers is a center Step with 3-panels. Mine is a side Step card with 2 panels. If you like step cards check this horizontal Halloween Step Card. Bottom line is I liked it so much I made 2!

Paper Piecing using Breathtaking Bouquet - Part 1

stamp works well for today's fun technique: Paper Piecing

The concept is easy:

stamp the same image several times on different color paper

Cut each image and reassemble the parts in different colors

For this first card I simply layered 

the yellow piece on the darker base

 The gold heat embossing adds some extra shine.

With the darker colors and "busyness" of the image

the challenge was how to make the sentiment

fit in, be seen but not overwhelm the card

The solution was to heat emboss on Vellum 

and layer on punched pieces.

Today's paper pieced project was a simple 1-layer card.

Sponged and Embossed Vellum Butterfly

Its finally spring here in southern Wisconsin, no butterflies yet, but my hostas and daffodils are several inches tall already. Everything is just green right now, but in anticipation of some colorful flowers to come I made this butterfly card.

It was hard to know what colors to use on this butterfly, there is so much variety in nature. I settled on something that kind of matched the flowers. 

Here's how I did the butterfly: The butterfly is stamped on Vellum - which is a translucent parchment paper. I stamped the butterfly in White Craft Ink and then heat embossed it with White Embossing powder.  To get the color I sponged Melon Mambo and Bermuda Bay on the back side. Adding the color on the back gives greater contrast for the detail on the front. I really love how this turned out.

Vellum vs. Whisper White

Are you familiar withVellum Paper?  Vellum is a translucent parchment paper. I made similar cards with the ghost framelit from Stampin'UP!'s Fall Fest Bundle. 

I like how the white ghosts on the second card really "pop" off the gray background.  White was a good choice for that card.

On the first card I used Vellum because I wanted the ghosts to be translucent so you could see the details of the wood grain through them.

Vellum has lots of other uses too.  Its translucent properties make it a good material for LED "candle" projects.  And it give a very formal look to invitations and announcements.
