Emboss Resist with a Watercolor Wash

Here's a project that combines 2 techniques:we create a colorful background with a watercolor wash and our focal point "pops" with an emboss resist.

Each of these projects was made with watercolor paper. For easy movement of the ink you'll want to start with damp paper.  Stampin'Up! does sell a Spritzer that creates a fine mist for good coverage.  

Stampin'Up! also sells a set of water painters. These are paint brushes with the water in the barrel of the brush, for easy no-mess painting. And the set has a wide bristle brush perfect for the watercolor wash technique.

The first sample was heat embossed in gold
. . . so the sentiment is highlighted with a small strip of gold foil

The resist technique looks great with white embossing too.

The watercolor wash technique works well with a black image too
just be sure to use StazOn, or another non-water soluble ink.

 Its easy to create a watercolor wash background, it looks good over plain black stamping and really "pops" with an emboss resist. Check out the supply list below. Ombre Emboss Resist with Breathtaking Bouquet

Today's card features a combination of 2 techniques: 

an ombre coloring combined with a heat emboss resist

Heat Emboss Resist is an easy technique,

you heat emboss an image and apply color over it. 

The paper accepts the ink but the material used to emboss does not.

With an emboss resist your color choice can produce different results...

In that post I applied the color with an art sponge
For the ombre effect on today's card I used a sponge brayer
While I'm sure you could use a sponge for this,
given the large area I felt I got better coverage with the brayer.

The image is the Breathtaking Bouquet background stamp
which is very "busy". So the sentiment needed to be big and bold.

a heat resist with ombre coloring gives a background
that truly is seriously, the best!

Emboss Resist with Pre-Embossed Papers

Here a little "Friday fun", especially if you're looking for a weekend project. This post is about a technique called: Emboss Resist.  The concept of a resist is that you put something on the paper that prevents the ink from sticking to the paper, in other words, it "resists" the ink. When you heat set embossing powder it does just that.

For this card I embossed the flower in white,  

and then sponged green around the image for a "halo" effect, 

and used markers to color the petals and leaves.

You don't have to color the image. You can get some stunning results with a solid image too. And the technique works well for a background. To see more details on these projects just click on the photo.

  

So, what do you need to do a resist? You need embossing powder (I used white on these projects but you could use other colors too) and a heat tool. You'll also need an art grade sponge (a kitchen sponge is not flexible enough - trust me, I tried them and it doesn't work!)

If you've never embossed before you're in for a treat. Its really fun to watch the powder turn all shiney as it "sets" to the paper.  Just stamp, sprinkle the powder over the ink and add heat. My images were stamped with Stampin'UP!'s White Craft ink and sprinkled with White embossing powder. 

Would you like to emboss a color? If you have colored embossing powder then you want to use a clear ink like Versamark Ink. Actually I've found that all of Stampin'UP!'s inks are "gooey" enough to hold on embossing powder, I just use a clear embossing powder.
