July Stamping Technique: Coloring with DSP

Card made with Stampin'UP!'s Papillon Potpourri stamp set and colored with DSPThe August Stamping Technique was "Coloring with DSP" - if you're not up on all the acronyms DSP means Designer Series Papers.  For this card we used the DSP to color the butterfly.

This is such a simple technique. You just stamp on the Designer paper and either punch or cut out the image to apply to your project. There are so many paper designs available, just pick a color and pattern that fits your stamp image.

This image was heat embossed, to make the butterfly image really "pop" off the Designer Paper.

Speaking of the butterfly, I LOVE that Stampin'UP! offers matching stamps and punches.  I could have used a scissors and "fussy cut" the butterfly - but my Elegant Butterfly punch makes this quick and easy. The butterfly is from a stamp set called Papillon Potpourri which was made to go with our butterfly punches.

Elegant Butterfly PunchDo you ever get those annoying black speckles everywhere when you heat emboss in black?  Here's how I solved that problem - I never use black embossing powder anymore.  Now I just stamp in black ink and use clear embossing powder.  I used to use Black Craft Ink, but Stampin'UP!'s new foam ink pads are actually gooey enough to emboss with. So, cool bonus: now you can emboss in ANY color.  I always keep a few extra jars of clear embossing powder on my supply shelf.

Hope you found something useful here.

Buy 3 - Get 1 FREE: Designer Series Papers

Stampin'UP!'s July 2013 Designer Print Paper sale
Stampin'UP!'s current promotion is on Designer Series Papers.

Card made with Stampin'UP!'s Mixed Medley stamp set and Designer Print Papers
Designer Printed Papers are wonderful! You can use them for so many things.
  1. Designer printed papers make a really pretty background layer  like on this card and this on circle lay-out
  2. Some printed papers are so pretty you want to use them as the focal piece, like on Dad's vest
  3. You can use strips of designer prints as accents on a project
  4. You can "color" your image by stamping on Designer Print Papers (like this snowman's hat and scarf) and today's card
Do you like the prints on this card?  The leaves are a little more obvious because I didn't stamp on them. The flower is also a print paper and with the flower image stamped on the Designer Paper it really has a soft mottled look.

So, grab your catalog or check out the on-line version here.  You'll find the Designer Papers on pages 151, 153 and 154.

Buy any of the regular Designer paper Packs
(not the stacks and not the specialty papers)
and when you choose 3 you'll get a 4th one FREE!

Free is good!  You can have tons of fun playing with Stampin'UP! Designer Print Papers.

Thanks for stopping by

Coloring with DSP!

Card made with Stampin'UP! stamp set Snow Much Fun and colored with (DSP) Designer papers
Have you tried this impressive little coloring trick?  Color your images with DSP (Designer Series Paper). Its a great way to get both color AND a pattern onto your images.

Parts of this image were colored with markers: the boots, the band on his hat and the buttons and birds. The rest, his hat and scarf, were colored with DSP.

Coloring with DSP is a super easy technique!
1. Stamp the image on your project
2. Stamp the image AGAIN on a piece of DSP
    hint: smaller patterns work better
3. Cut out the parts you plan to use from the DSP
    and attach to the project

VOILA!

The snowflake embellishment in the bottom corner was created with the new Snow Flurry Die from the Holiday Mini Catalog. I cut the smaller snowflake from Silver Glimmer paper and embellished the center with a self-stick pearl.

Stampin'UP! stamp set Snow Much FunThe snowman is from a stamp set called: Snow Much Fun found in the main catalog. These 2 little guys are so cute and the variety of images in the set really lets you do a lot with them.
  • The 2 snowmen are facing the right direction to show them interacting with each other (can you see a snowball fight?)
  • The images can be inked with a marker (instead of an ink pad) so you can stamp just the bird, or just the snowball, or the snowman without the birds. Here is the tall snowman without one of the birds.
The possibilities are endless.  What kind of scenes would you create from these images?

Coloring with Designer Papers is a really fun technique. And Stampin'UP! has so many papers to choose from.  My hints for trying this are (1) to choose images that are easy to cut out (you'll notice I did not cut the fringe on his scarf) and (2) to choose a paper with a smaller print design.  Other than that its super easy and fun.
