September 2020 Home Decor SU Style

Today's project is a home decor item.  Most of us use our paper for cards or scrapbooks, but pretty paper can dress up many things around the house too.  I wanted something simple and quick for my dining room table.

Today's project is an altered candle holder with a ring of paper leaves at its base.

Despite the fact that there's almost 2 dozen leaves on this project it actually went pretty fast. I think I completed it in under a half hour. There is a die to cut the leaves so that helped speed up the process.

Everyone needs a good leaf set and I like the versatility of Stampin'Up!'s Gather Together bundle

It actually took longer to crumple all the leaves than it did to cut them.  But of course crumpling them is what give it a realistic look. Otherwise it would just be layers of flat paper.

You can do this so easily with any candle stick and any color papers you have (the colors I used are listed at the bottom of this post). To provide a base for the leaves I cut a circle of cardboard with a hole in the middle and adhered the crumpled leaves to the cardboard filling in the gaps.

Add a little metallic bow to the top of the candle stick and voila!
Simple, sweet, seasonal and easy.

I hope this gave you some ideas

Gather Together with 3 Ways to Distress a Project

Fall provides us with many opportunities to gather together with friends and family, both for the holidays and to enjoy the changing seasons.

Fall also provides some wonderful visual inspiration for our projects. Today I offer you 2 cards, both made with Stampin'UP!'s Gather Together stamp set and matching Gathered Leaves Dies.

Its not just the colors of fall that provide inspiration - its also the richness of the textures. The second card is the same lay-out but with a more distressed look.

I used 3 different distressing techniques.

  1. For the leaves I crumpled them in my hands and then flatted them out.
Then I sponged over them with their own color ink. The raised wrinkles picked up the ink more than the lower areas to give each leaf its own unique coloring.
  2. For the accent strips:   I dragged my scissors along the edge to give it a rough distressed look
I LOVE my Stampin'UP! paper snips. The thin blade is perfect for this technique.
Yesterday's post showed another project where I was loving my paper snips.
  3. For the background: I randomly sponged on some Versamark Ink. You could achieve the same look by sponging on Crumbcake.

ProTIP:  You have to use an art sponge, a kitchen sponge is too rigid.  I cut my sponges up into wedges. To save them for re-use I also mark which color is on the sponge. Just staple a strip of the matching cardstock to the small end of the wedge. As a bonus the paper works as a handle to help keep your fingers clean.

Do you have a good versatile leaf stamp set and dies?  If not I encourage you to take a close look at the Gather Together stamp set and the Gathered Leaves Dies.  They can each be purchased separately, but now through December you can save 10% when you buy them as a bundle. Full product list is at the end of the post.

Come to Gather Leaves

Just a quick post today to show you some of what I've been working on.
These are the leaves from the Gather Together Stamp set and Gathered Leaves Dies

Fall cards made with the leaves from Stampin'UP!'s Gather Together stamp set and Gathered Leaves dies

Fall is such a fun time for stamping. I love the color pallette and playing with new techniques for distressing the project.

One common and easy way to give a distressed look is to sponge the edges of the paper. Its simple but very effective.

The coloring here is also very simple. After the leaf was stamped I just did some random watercoloring on top and then diecut.

If you want to keep up with my daily stamping then be sure to check my Facebook Page.  On my stamp days I tend to post all the silly mistakes as well as a few tips and tricks.  Only thefinished projects get posted here.

The product list for this card is below. Leave a comment, I'm happy to answer any questions.  Thanks for stopping by and have an INKcredible day.
