Leaf Shaker Card - the October Monthly Craft Kit Project

Sometimes you just like to have someone else do the thinking for you.  I do enjoy the creative aspect of papercrafting, but sometimes I just like to make pretty stuff and I don't want to have to think too hard. That's part of why I like getting Stampin'UP!'s monthly craft kit.

Each month its a surprise: We never know ahead of time what the project will be - sometimes its cards and sometimes its some other paper project. But its always something fun, and how cool is this - the October 2016 project was a Shaker Card!

There's 2 Key things to making a Shaker Card
  1. You can use any shape hole . . . this card uses a leaf shape,
but you need the acetate window sheet to cover the hole and to see through
  2. You can fill the shaker space with any small item . . . this card uses sequins,
but you need an adhesive with some dimension so they have room to move around
Stampin'UP!'s Adhesive strips are designed for making Shaker Cards.

Butterfly Shaker Card with Sequins

Here's a fun card - its a shaker card filled with sequins. You can make a shaker card with any shape, I used a butterfly die for this card.

If you're thinking of trying a shaker card I have a few suggestions.

First thing to think about is placement of the images.  On this card I stamped the sentiment first and then diecut the shape. You can stamp the rest of the imagery around the sentiment and the hole.

Second: regarding order of operations.
  • Decorate the front first - because it will be "lumpy" and impossible to stamp on after you've created the shaker part.
  • Remember to adhere the window sheet to the back side of the hole BEFORE you line it with dimensionals - OK I confess, I've done that and you feel really dumb as you're ripping off the dimensionals.
  • create your "well" for the shaker elements (sequins on this card) but fill it BEFORE you remove the sticky backing
  • Use a separate sheet of paper over the hole to close it. Then attach it to the base.

These are the products I used on the Butterfly Shaker Card

Gold Star Shaker Card

A shaker card is perfect for celebrating anything. People just love a card that does something. And it doesn't matter your age.  Kids love 'em and so do grandpas.

The card is even more fun when the shaker window is a special shape. For this card the shape is a balloon - although with the Baker's Twine bow its hard to tell the shape isn't just a plain circle. I made the shape with Stampin'UP!'s Balloon Framelits die

I love all the gold on this card. Gold Baker's twine, gold embossing on the sentiment (from a set called Sassy Salutations). And Gold Foil backing paper.

The stars in the shaker window were punched from a scrap sheet of gold foil paper using the Confetti Stars Border Punch. I used the Confetti Stars punch on the bottom of the white piece too so that the gold foil paper would be visible through the holes.

How to make a Shaker Card:
1. Punch or die cut the hole
2. Adhere a sheet of Acetate over the back of the hole (to keep in your little pieces)
3. On the back of the acetate, use foam Dimensionals, to create a wall around the hole.
The Dimensionals have enough depth to allow the little pieces to move around.
4. Add your little pieces and cover with a backing material.
You should now have sealed shaker compartment
5. Adhere to your project.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you've been inspired to play today
