Extra Cake Layers

If you're a chocolate fan like me you're going to like this . . . I'm going to show you how to add an extra layer to this cake.  Its literally a "Piece of Cake". Look close at the background - the stamp has only 2 layers.  My cake as 3 layers. Yum!

The trick to getting the 3rd layer is to stamp the cake normally so you get your top 2 layers. Then put a post-it over what you just stamped and stamp again repositioning the stamp to add the extra layer.  A picture is worth a 1000 words, see . . . piece of cake, right?

Is that yummy icing making you drool?  Use your Fine Tip Glue pen after coloring it to get the shine.

The background is easy to make. The stamp set comes with 4 different cake images. Mount them all on a single block and stamp 4 at a time. Quick and easy!

The Piece of Cake stamp set has a coordinating punch, with a wonderful cake stand. You can see it used as intended on these cards.  But for this project I just wanted a cake plate instead of a stand.

Creating Depth: Overlapping and Masking

Balloons are a festive way to celebrate any occasion: birthday, anniversary, retirement, graduation . . . you name it.

Creating Depth: The thing I want to point out with this card is the overlap of the images. For the card we stamped the yellow balloons on the card face. Then I stamped the red balloon on scrap paper and punched it out and layered it on top the yellow balloons. Using foam dimensional pieces its raised up a bit as well as overlapping the yellow balloons to give a sense of depth to the card.

I stamped my envelope too!

Notice the difference between these 2 envelopes? You can't use the foam dimensionals on the outside of the envelope, they'd get torn off in the delivery process. 

For the top envelope I stamped one balloon over the other including the string and the bow. I thought it looked way too busy and messy.  

For the 2nd envelope I "masked" the red balloon.  That is, I stamped the red balloons first. Then I punched a scrap balloon shape and covered the red balloon image to protect it while I stamped the yellow balloon and its string and bow on top the space. when I lifted off the scrap balloon the red one appears on top. Voila! Instant dimension in 2D that won't get destroyed going through the mail.

Serene Silhouette Sunset

This gorgeous sunset scene was stamped with one of the images from Serene Silhouettes. This stamp set was the first one I ordered from the new catalog.  I just love all the images in it.  I'm a sucker for silhouette cards anyway and this set is just perfect for making silhouettes.  

The image was embossed because we were sponging over it and I didn't want to smear the ink.  After embossing we cut it out with the new Framelits dies.  Then we sponged on the color.

Do you like the "sun" behind the tree?  After we embossed the image we then punched a circle from a post-a-note. We placed the post-a-note where the sun was to be and sponged over it.  The unsponged area became the sun. The technique is just like the moon on the polar bear card.

I'd meant to most this photo when I shared the polar bear card and somehow got sidetracked talking about the Iridescent Ice on the snow and the stamp set.  So here it is - it just shows the technique for using a post-a-note to mask when sponging a sky.

Stamping Technique: Masking

The featured technique for the August Stamp classes was Masking.  The concept of a "mask" is that you cover something, in this case you cover it to protect it.

To create the mask, stamp your image on scrap paper and cut it out.  Actually, I like using a Post-It because the post-it is sticky and will stay where I put in on my project. It can also be peeled off without damaging the project.

To use the Mask, stamp your image on the project, cover it with the Post-It and then stamp over the Post-It.

The technique of Masking is most useful when you want to stamp a scene where it looks like "things" have been tossed one on top the other: flower arrangements are a common use for this technique. In the case of our August project we did sea shells tossed up on a beach.

And speaking of the beach:  Check this photo.  We made sand on the bottom of the project and then added  some Dazzling Details (Stampin'UP!'s glitter glue in a bottle) to make the sand look wet.

We started out making the sand with the Color Spritzer tool.  But with so many people all doing the same thing the marker got too dry so we ended up just making dots by hand with the fine point marker tip.  It was equally effective.

A Mixed Bunch

The title of today's post has a double meaning: Mixed Bunch!  First, the stamp set is called Mixed Bunch.  And second, the card also shows a "mixed bunch" of different techniques:  Emboss Resist and Masking.

The card front is a single piece of cardstock that was masked to protect the sentiment. The sentiment was stamped first and then protected by placing a "mask" over it. Thats how we got just part of a flower image on the lower half of the card. By the way, the sentiment set is called Perfectly Penned.

The flowers are done with the emboss resist technique.  

• The card face is a piece of Very Vanilla Cardstock. 
• The flowers were stamped in Versamark and clear embossed. 
• The centers of the flowers were colored with a Chocolate Chip marker. 
• Then the flower area was sponged with Soft Suede ink.

The Ribbon is 2 pieces and really easy to do. One wraps around the card and is adhered to the back. Then a 2nd small piece was looped and adhered to the front using Mini Glue-Dots. And a single Self-Stick Rhinestone for a little bling.  Once the vanilla card piece is finished it was mounted on a Chocolate Chip Card base.
